An internship cover letter doesn't need to apologise for missing experience. It needs to show curiosity, a concrete project, and a reason this particular company matters to you. Here's how.

Dear hiring team,

I'm a final-year CS student at Université Lyon 1 looking for a 6-month software engineering internship starting in March. I'm writing because I spent last semester contributing to freeCodeCamp's Spanish React curriculum, and your platform was one of the references I kept coming back to while teaching myself.

On my side projects I've shipped a small SaaS that imports bank statements and categorises transactions with a fine-tuned model — happy to walk through the codebase in an interview. The thing I'd most like to learn at your team is how a real production codebase is reviewed and shipped: most of what I know today is self-taught and I'm ready to be challenged.

I can start anytime between March and June, for 6 months, and I hold an EU passport so no visa work is needed.

Thanks for your time,

Léa Dubois · lea.dubois@example.com

Writing tips

  • Name one course, hackathon or open-source contribution that's relevant.
  • Explain why this company, not just any company.
  • Be explicit about dates, duration and visa status.
  • Keep enthusiasm short — proof beats adjectives.
